Why WIFT is adding a plus to its name

november 28, 2023 | By | No Comments

The history of Women in Film (and Television) is long and important, and it has grown tremendously on a global scale in just the last few years. With chapters in 6 continents, members now come from a variety of different cultures and backgrounds.

And to think, W.I.F. in Los Angeles celebrates 50 years this year! In the organization’s beginnings, we worked hard to advocate for women working in the screen industries – in front of and behind the camera – to achieve gender parity. This is still true today, but a lot has also happened in the last 50 years.

Today we need a broader perspective, without losing what has been. WIFT today still works to dismantle gender biases in the screen industries by building the pipelines, sustaining careers and advocating for change. Today the work serves not only women, but also non-binary, transgender and gender non-conforming persons.

In our continued work through an intersectional feminist lens, we are already widening this lens without losing our focus on women and the historical legacy.

Therefore, at a recent board meeting, we unanimously made the decision to add a “+” after WIFT in Sweden.

We hope you will continue your support in advancing equality, economic equity, inclusion and parity in the screen industry in Sweden.

With love,
Theo Lindberg
